THE PGCE ROUTE: WHAT IS THE SHIRE FOUNDATION PGCE?

  WHAT TYPE OF COURSE IS THIS?

 

The Shire is accredited to award QTS. It meets the requirements of The Training And Development Agency For Schools (TDA) and on successful completion of all component parts trainees will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This is the only qualification that ensures a GTC number and access to professional contracts and rates of pay.

 

The course is also validated for PGCE( Professional Graduate Certificate in Education) through the University of Bedfordshire.

 

  WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS OF THE COURSE?

 

The course consists of:

 

  • Professional Studies providing an introduction to current educational issues.  
  • Broad Curriculum Studies covering both theory and practice and with a close study of the National Curriculum subjects at Key Stage 1 and 2 and The Foundation Stage.
  • Structured Mentoring- qualified support through the course

     

     

 

The course is designed to produce practitioners who are fully conversant with all aspects of the Primary teacher’s role in the 3-11 area.

 

 

A high percentage of trainee time is spent in school putting theory into practice. Experiences in Key Stages 1 and 2 and The Foundation Stage will assist trainees to make  an informed choice of focus.

 

WHERE DO TRAINEES STUDY?

 

 

Trainees are based at one of the consortium schools in Luton . Teaching practice placements occur in at least two of the consortium or associate schools. Final teaching practice is at the base schools. There are opportunities to visit other schools and LEA resource centres. Lectures tutorials and workshops are held at the LLRC in Luton .

 

 

. WHAT DOES THE COURSE AIM TO DO?

 

It aims to: 

 

  • Work on basic classroom competence to develop trainees' confidence in working effectively with children.

     

  • Involve trainees in professional discourse with experienced staff and tutors on a wide range of topics.

     

  • Look closely at the organisation and management of a proficient and stimulating working environment. Combine theory and practice to secure a full foundation on which trainees can build a successful and rewarding career.

 WILL I BE THROWN IN AT THE DEEP END?

  

Initially, time in school will be spent in structured observation. Gradually as you become more experienced you will be given the opportunity to work with individual children, moving on to a small group and partial class teaching until your mentor feels you are ready for whole class involvement Teaching will eventually represent 80% of your timetable.

  

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS COURSE?

 

  • It is designed and delivered by experienced educationalists.

     

  • The focus is on practical classroom organisation and management.

     

  • Trainees will be based in a school and will be supported by a trained mentor/school-based tutor.

     

WILL I HAVE A JOB AFTER TRAINING?

 

 

Although your qualifications will entitle you to teach in England and Wales , successful completion of the course will not automatically guarantee you employment. Scotland and Ireland  have their own regulations for teachers.
